Made this in memory of Robin Williams. It didn't occur to me to make Genie until we had watched Aladdin on Disney channel a few days after his passing. Disney Channel had added "in memory of Robin Williams" at the end of the film with a picture of Genie's face in the sky made of stars, and at that point I knew I had to create that wonderful character myself, because Genie really WAS Robin. Not just because he looked like him, but because all of that energy and enthusiasm seemed to be captured perfectly by the endless possibilities of animation.
I hope I did him justice; Genie was one of the most challenging things I have ever made. I have about two full pages of scraped notes because I remade his head at least three times before I was satisfied. It was a struggle to figure out just how I wanted him to come together, if I wanted him to look as close to the character as possible, or stylized in some way, and I never had a precise picture in my head. I was so nervous about his face, because one wrong move and he ends up looking strange. Disney characters look great on paper but are so difficult to recreate in 3D.
Overall, I am very happy with him and I don't think I could have done any better with the current skills I have.
Also, he stands up on his own when placed very carefully on a flat surface which was GREAT for photographing.
